The government of Kenya in collaboration with the governments of Japan  and Belgium have launched a project at the Kenya Science Teachers  Campus of Nairobi University to provide free online text books and past papers to secondary students in the country.

Launching the project, the minister for education Prof. Sam Ongeri reiterated the need to provide affordable and accessible education to children in the country.  He said the cost of text books is too high and many schools and students cannot afford them. This has made quality education accessible to only a few students and schools especially in National schools and some provincial schools.

With the introduction of this project, all students should be in a position to read textbooks online. Examination past papers will also be available for revision purposes. The initial phase will benefit four schools in each district. The four schools will be provided with a computer, a UPS and internet connectivity. The project will then expand to other schools later.

Prof. Ongeri also said the project will increase the usage of computers in schools most of which have yet to see a computer at this age where modern technology has penetrated in all sectors of life. The Kenya Institute if education (KIE and the Kenya Education Staff Institute (KESI) will also be brought on board to synchronize the material to be published on the internet for the schools and students.
