NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 22 - Makadara Member of
Parliament Gidion Kioko Mbuvi alias Mike Sonko was due to
spend the night in police custody, after an attempt by
detectives to arraign him in court became time-barred on
Monday evening.
Mr Mbuvi had spent a better part of the day recording a
statement at the CID Headquarters on Kiambu Road before he
was moved to the Kibera law courts shortly before 5pm.
Reports however said they arrived at the law courts well
after the close of business, prompting officers to move the
MP to the Gigiri Police station where he was booked in to
spend the night.
He was expected to appear in court on Tuesday morning to
face a fraud charge according to police sources.
The Makadara MP had arrived at the CID Headquarters at 11am
and was later taken to the court under tight security.
Mr Mbuvi has been in the limelight since his entry to
Parliament in a by-election. Soon after his election, he
was involved in a spat with a DJ at Capital FM.
Over the weekend, there were conflicting reports about the
possible arrest of the lawmaker leading to street protests
by his supporters.
Mr Mbuvi was elected to Parliament in September on a NARC
Kenya ticket in a by-election where he trounced former MPs
Dick Wathika and Reuben Ndolo.
He has however courted controversy since his entry to the
House with media reports suggesting he may have had crossed
paths with law enforces long before his entry to politics.
He prides himself in representing the welfare of young
people.
